Major site redevelopment

The current Mystify site is starting to look a bit tired and contains 3rd party components that have been flagging up with security warnings for a while.

My options were to either upgrade the site but keep it within the same framework, or completely re-do it.

When I say, 'completely', that's not quite true, as the functionality in the database doesn't need changing.

However, since I did the last version of Mystify, I have learned lots of better ways to even do some of these.

Plus, as part of my real job, I have moved onto different technologies. As I used the site partly as a test bed for new ideas in terms of work, then I've made a decision to try to improve as many aspects as possible.

Thus, I have made a start on a complete new site and have completed the security (login) aspects and am now working on the home page.

I won't say much more for now, as a lot of work is to come.

However, I will leave the current home page screenshot here.....

Youth academy screen changes

The youth academy page is the first thing I have attempted to alter so that it uses client side script functionality.

By that, I mean that the browser will do most of the work, meaning it should be much quicker to process requests.

There are 2 aspects to the Youth Academy page. There is a whole section to manage the players in a youth academy and there is a section to update the expenditure on youth development.

The latter is the completed bit at this moment in time with the former to be worked on next.

Whilst doing this work, I'm also attempting to improve the look of the pages to make them more user friendly.

Without trying to get too technical, this is my explanation of what I've changed....the previous way of working is actually for the user to hit a button and that then submits the whole page to the server, in order to get a result back. So in the case of the youth academy page, even though only expenditure may be changing, all the youth players are submitted along with the new expenditure value and then they are ignored. The new way of working just submits the relevant expenditure value to the server and it does this by linking to a new system that I have built (called an API).

Using script that runs in the browser means that the whole page doesn't need to be sent to the server and I can cherry pick the relevant information - in the case of expenditure - just the new value.

The API can then return a result as to whether it was successful or not, and, if not, why.

Hopefully that makes sense but for people that aren't interested in the technical specifics, below are the images of how the page has changed.

So this is the current screen:

and when the 'Change expenditure' button is clicked, it becomes this:

Clicking cancel or update then sends the whole page to the server and the page goes back to looking like the first image.

It's slow due to the server receiving the whole page - including player data (which isn't in this screenshot) and not immediately obvious that updating the expenditure value it has worked - the value does update but it's not very fancy.

The new way of doing it is to start off with the first screen, click 'Change expenditure' and get this:
If an error is made when entering then it will show this:

and then on a successful update, this:

It looks much nicer and is much more obvious. The best part as far as I am concerned is that the whole thing happens without as much delay. Obviously I can't demonstrate this part but I hope to do similar functionality with player management and then launch it for all to use.

It's taken me a while to build the basic API aspects but now they are complete, I should be able to progress through the site, removing full server posts for small aspects, far more quickly.

Responsive manager header menu

Following on from the previous blog post, I wanted to demonstrate the new manager header menu and here it is;

You can see a new menu at the top right of the screen (which will drop below the 'Mystify Soccer' title on mobile devices).

This is going to contain various bits of information in what I feel is a better format to the way that the current site does it.

There will be a 'Status' menu that will show the current season/week and the date of the next matches. The notifications will warn you if you haven't selected a team or let you know of any transfer/loan requests that are still being waited for. There will also be a 'mail' menu that will show unread mail messages and, finally, there will be a menu to access your account details and sign out of the site.

I have completed all of this menu except for the mail drop down aspects which I hope to do over the next few days.

Once done, I will be looking at bringing in the current site pages (and we'll see how they look)!

New responsive layout

I haven't posted on this blog for a while because development has been a bit lax.

However, with my recent decision to try and focus on it a bit more, I'm hoping to revive this blog as I do different stages of the development but we'll see how my life gets on.

I need somewhere to note down my thoughts as to where I am currently at anyway.

The current state of play is that the site needs to become mobile friendly and more future proof so that aspects (new functionality) can be easier to implement.

My current plan is that I change the outer shell of the site and then work through the pages afterwards so once launched, the menu/header/footer will scroll and resize nicely but the actual page content may end up stretching pages or looking a bit odd. I'll then work through the pages as and when I get chance to make them all look and flow better for mobile devices..

Once this has been done and looks are OK - I want to improve functionality so that users get a better experience. Then I can look at improving the ganeral game.

The one caveat to the outer shell update is that I also need to do the home page and login page alongside it.

So then, here is the current layout for users who aren't signed into the site;

This then scales to a mobile phone like such;

There are differing sizes in between too for tablets and various other screen sizes.

The above, of course are for managers not signed into the site.

Once signed in, there is an extra section at the top of the site which is for notifications. I will aim to give more information on that on my next blog post.

Transfer searching

As I said.... buses.......

I have tweaked the transfer list and pool searches to enable an age selection and to include injured players or not. Possibly more search criteria can go in there yet but I'm on a roll and adding things from my suggestions list as a priority before I start getting too involved with it.

This will be the new transfer list search;

This will be the new transfer pool search;

Hopefully you are liking these additions to the site - I'm bracing myself to start implementing player contracts and hoping these little niceties keep everybody happy in the meantime.

Manager achievements

Mystify game updates are like buses..... here's another change that I will be implementing soon.

It's a change to the managers's profile page where previously you could see a managers' awards. You will now also be able to see what trophies they have won or come runners up in during their time as manager.

The attached screen shot from William Hsu's page shows his achievements with his 2 teams. You may also notice an addition at the top where it says how many weeks he has been in charge of the teams.

Some of the long term managers (who joined before March 2010) may have this a little faulty for their primary team as I didn't store exact game week numbers for managers joining clubs until then. I just have a date and have attempted to guess the game week number from that. If any managers know this is wrong I will be able to correct it providing you can remember the game you first managed a team for. You just need to let me know.

If not, I don't think it will be that big an issue as it will only be a few weeks out and can't include that many achievements that aren't yours. As stated though, I could always correct it if you let me know.

To any managers reading this, I'm not bothered if this is mentioned on the message board now. May be fun for you to talk about it and confuse managers who won't know how you know it is coming!

Advanced match tactics

You may have noticed that I have mentioned 3 game developments on the main site. 1 of which I have been vague about.

I know this blog doesn't get updated often but I don't get chance to develop that often either so the 2 go hand in hand. As such, I'm interested to know who follows this blog, however you may read it, and I would appreciate it if you don't post the below on the game message board.

However, feel free to let me know in the comments that you have read it (and you play the game).

Anyway, this is a sample screen shot (not finished) of the new game tactics;

It's not finished yet because it doesn't actually do anything - I've only altered/added to the display. My next job is to make this page work and save to the database before I implement it into the game engine.

If you are wondering, then you will be able to add multiple of each - so you can attack for one half and then change to defensive after 45 minutes. On top of making the changes at specific times, there are a list of reasons for a change shown here;

This means a change will only happen if the selected scenario matches.

As well as this, I will be adding an option to select 'Any' minute so that a change will happen based on just the scenario. Therefore if you have a man sent off you can go all defensive - or attack even more if you like! I haven't established exactly how the 'any minute' feature will work yet because 'if drawing' for example could happen multiple times and there may be conflicts so I will work on that as I implement it.

I know some of you may suggest that this should be done with substitutions as well and I intend to at some point. I'll try to walk with this first before running with timed subs.

Team colours

I have recently established the colours for every team in the Mystify Soccer game. I will shortly be displaying them on the team pages like this:

They are possibly also useful to help managers differentiate what team they are currently managing in the case where they have 2 but I'm unsure where I can place them on each page so it;'s obvious.

I've tried a subtle horizontal line near the top of the page but it doesn't seem to have been noticed.

Therefore any ideas or suggestions would be handy.

Player contracts

OK, this could be a biggie.

I am still working on the game engine and I do see one or two complaints about not enough shots going in or too many cards, for example. However, you won't see the changes to things like this dramatically as it would be unfair to make the changes too drastic but be assured, they parameters the game uses are being altered and monitored so that eventually it will get there.

However, whilst monitoring them I am trying to bring in the other features I feel are required. the biggest one being Player Contracts.

The end game is to remove player valuations from the game as I actually want a free market where people negotiate properly with no limits (barring perhaps an upper limit to stop stupidity). The reason valuations are there are to try and discourage cheating but contracts should stop all that - if I can get it right.

So, I'm starting to think about how to implement this. I have lots of ideas in my head but am looking for as much input as possible. I need it so that players won't be signing for clubs they don't want to play for as a definite requirement. By this, I mean top players won't play in the bottom leagues and poorer players won't always sign for clubs to never play (although there will be some players happy to pick up a pay cheque and do naff all else).

It also goes hand in hand with clubs finances and I perhaps need to have a wage bill limit per club that matches their division. This is possibly the only thing I am pretty sure of at the moment.

So before I go into depth about things I have considered already (as I don't want to sway thoughts a certain way), please let me have any thoughts you have about what you'd like to see with player contracts. Should players be allowed to sign a contract with a club within the last 30 weeks of their current one? How would you like negotiations to take place? Should players always sign for the biggest offer? Do I need to include signing on fees?

Any thoughts are welcome before I get started on this big change.

Timeline update

In case you didn't realise, I am currently working on improving the timeline for the match reports. It's not finished yet but I like to provide updates every now and again.

The first thing I need to do is actually log the match details in the database.  Once I have done this I can add the data to the screen reports. I have provided an example of where I am at below and you will see it contains all shots, both on and off target, alongside the data that was previously there (goals and substitutions). The below is actually a genuine match that was played earlier this week and so you will be able to view this once I put it live.

My next challenge is to include yellow and red cards into this timeline - it should give managers a better idea of how their game went because at the moment they just know a red card occurred in a game with no idea if it was in the first ten minutes or at the end of the game. I need to store these times in the database first though so don't expect it too quickly. I may, however, put the current timeline live sometime before I add cards just to show improvements to those who don't read this blog.

Transfers by new managers

I notice recently that there has been a spate of sad people taking over teams, selling their best players and then quitting.

I've tried numerous things in the past to try and stop this happening but it's getting to the stage where I will have to make transfers occur by bid only, which would remove a lot of the freedom but also make it much much harder to cheat.

Before I do this though, I'd like to look for alternative suggestions.

One suggestion I have had put to me is to not let new managers make transfer for a certain period of time and I'd like to know what people's thoughts on this are. I know there is some debate on the message board at the moment but I only scan this and don't get involved. This blog post is therefore for a proper debate to be had, with me joining in. The more comments the merrier as I'd like to come up with a solution that suits as many people as possible.

Player wages

After some research I've come to the conclusion that the player wages are currently too low.

Therefore at the end of this season I will be implementing a new system to handle them. My long term aim is to have player contracts in the game but I need to get the figures right first before I can even contemplate this.

Therefore, below is what I am going to implement although any comments before the end of the season will be taken on board and it will possibly change because of this.

Firstly, I am going to stop correcting salaries on a weekly basis and they will just be calculated at the end of a season. This means that you can budget a bit better and promotions or relegations mean you have to offload or purchase players at once perhaps for the level you are at. this does sound more realistic even if not perfect.

The only variance here will be youth players who will be assigned a salary on promotion that will last until the season end.

At the end of a season the salaries are going to be based on all a players' skills as opposed to just their highest which is the case at the moment. they are also going to be generally higher overall and rounded up to values of £100. The maximum salary for a player will be £40,000. The current is £12,500. Players in their teens will be paid less than others and players between 20 and 23 will also be cut down but once reaching 24 they will be promoted to their maximum possible salary.

A player with skills of 60 for tackling, 69 for passing, 68 for heading, 60 for dribbling and 73 for shooting will currently earn around £9,000 just on the fact their shooting is 73 but this player should actually be paid more than somebody who has 75 for shooting and low values for the rest so in the new system will be paid around £25,000.

I appreciate this will cause more expense but then I have also remembered I lowered ticket prices because clubs were getting too much money. Once the salaries have been changed then I shall monitor again and ticket prices will probably also change. The end result will be a fairer balance.

Also, I'm contemplating giving clubs the offer to buy insurance for players, either individually or collectively. this would be in the format of paying a percentage of a players wage per week for insurance but then when they are injured (not suspended), the wage is not paid by you - although the insurance premium still will be. Any thoughts on this will be good.

Transfer & Loan Offers

I'm contemplating setting up a system that automatically rejects offers after a certain period of time if they haven't been actioned.

Is this something that you would want?

Should it perhaps be a setting for each manager to choose whether they want them automatically rejected or not after a certain period?

Any thoughts?

Skill changes

Over the weekend I made a start towards implementing much needed notification of skill changes.

I am going to show these on player pages - probably the training page and the actual player page with green and red values. The player page is also going to get a 10 week history.

I have implemented the first stage of this to run with Friday's matches - that is for the database to record the actual changes separately, rather than just changing the main value. If this works then I am hoping to work on the displays over the weekend so by Sunday I am hopeful you can see your training results without having to work it out yourself.

If anybody has any input towards this then now is the time to state......

I've been very busy at work recently which is why I haven't done it sooner but I'm now hoping I can get back to continuing the work I was doing on improvements as there's still lots I want to be done.

Belgian team names (again)

I know I have altered the Belgian team names quite recently but when I recently updated the Romanian teams, I gave them short names as well as their full names.

When I did the Belgian team names, I never did.

When I have done all the teams I aim to change certain pages of the site to list the shorter name but I need to have been through all the countries first and this means re-doing the Belgian list.

this may mean further tweaks to team names in Belgium occur over the next few weeks (when I get chance to do it). I'm hoping it won't be as severe but I shall be populating an as yet hidden field with a short name at the same time.

Then I have to pick the next country to work on. I'll try let you know by this blog my thoughts before I go ahead and change future countries.
